If special keyboard keys are not working – email, browser, mute, calculator…

Some keyboards include special keys, such as a key to open the eMail program, the browser or calculator, mute the speakers, etc. Especially after hardware changes you may find these keys not working anymore.

Don’t worry about your keyboard or your system, it is easy and fast to make those keys work again!

Open the Computer Management console and go to Services. In the list of services find one named “Human Interface Device Access”. Double click to open its properties and at the Startup type select the “Automatic” option. At the Service status click the “Start” button. Press OK and enjoy!

Human Interface Device Access enables generic input access to Human Interface Devices (HID), which activates and maintains the use of predefined hot buttons on keyboards, remote controls, and other multimedia devices. If it is stopped, hot buttons controlled by this service will no longer function. If it is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.
