Simply Slideshow will let you play thousands of photos in high performance. The program features minimal options, such as full screen or not, some simple transition effects, duration of each photo, etc. I personally miss an option to fit large photos to the screen, but not enlarge small photos.

IrfanView is fast and very convenient, really a browser, not an editor.

XnView image viewer is similar to Windows Explorer. You navigate the directory structure as desired and any image files found in a directory are displayed in miniature (Thumbnails). XnView also offers more advanced features such as Web page creation, contact prints, multiple conversion (format and transformation), slide shows, screen capturing and Twain support for scanners and digital cameras. Numerous image filters and effects for image processing are available.

Photostage will let you create a slideshow from your digital photos and even videos, helping you share them with family and friends. It will also let you set your photos to a soundtrack, record your own narrations and overlay text captions. Effects (including zoom, crop and fade).

AlSee is able to resize, rotate, convert, and save pictures, add word balloons, text, picture overlays, some simple effects (not satisfactory enough), picture frames, and make photo corrections, play Slide Shows (optionally with background music), print multiple images (for this you don’t need a separate program, Windows will let you print a lot of images at once in a convenient way). As a viewer is great, as an editor it will not satisfy some needs, while it lacks the option of opening a picture in an external editor.

AlbumDIY helps you arrange your photos on pages of a digital photo album. It is a nice program, with many options to customize the appearance of photos (frames and transparency variations, album background and borders, and more…), but not the transitions (fade in, out, slide in, etc). The finished album can be distributed as a standalone exe file, so that anyone can use it.
