ProVide is a free (for personal use, with up to 5 accounts) server that you can download and install on your computer to share large files with friends easily.

The program was known as zFTPServer Suite but is renamed to reflect how user friendly it is. I must admin that it is convenient and easy to use. My only complaint is that the free version is limited to only 5 accounts.

Provide features virtual directories, bandwidth control (per user or not), stats, and more.

Commercial versions add secure (SSL / TLS) transfers and more features and accounts.
