hMailServer easy to setup free eMail server for IMAP, SMTP and POP3, with spam and virus protection

hMailServer is a free eMail server supporting IMAP, SMTP and POP3. It can easily be integrated with many web mail systems. It features flexible score-based spam protection and can attach to your virus scanner to scan all incoming and outgoing email. I’ve tried a lot of so-called “free” personal email servers, and they are either trial versions, or crippled versions promoting a commercial big brother, or just crap. You can imagine what I felt when I tried this great piece of free software, hMailServer.

hMailServer uses a database server for data storage – MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server or PostgreSQL, depending on your choice. A minimal edition of Microsoft SQL Server is embedded within hMailServer, so if you don’t already have a database server in your network, this is automatically taken care of for you. The program comes with an easy-to-use API which can be used for integration with other software in your environment. As an example, many Internet service providers connect hMailServer to their existing administration system to reduce manual work involved with managing user accounts. hMailServer also has a built-in Active Directory integration.

Installing and configuring hMailServer is easy enough and takes only a few minutes. The server comes with an MMC-like administration called hMailAdmin. hMailAdmin lets you add domains & accounts, specify settings, enable virus scanning and so on. The documentation describes the features in detail. hMailServer is compatible with any email client which supports SMTP, POP3 and IMAP. This is true also when it comes to web mail clients. Depending on what server you are running, different web mail systems may suit your needs. hMailServer is pre-configured to have high security when it comes to relaying and authentication so that no one can use your server to send spam messages. It also supports the virus scanner ClamAV. Configuring hMailServer to use ClamAV takes a single click! The server also supports black list servers and other spam-stopping mechanisms such as SPF and MX lookups.
