Dim the entire desktop except for the active window, to protect your eyes and gain focus, with Dimmer Pro

If you work a lot on your PC you may like to keep many windows open to monitor stuff, even when you work mainly on only one window. To protect your eyes from excessive brightness you can dim all of your dekstop, making everything darker, but bright enough to follow information you may need to follow, while keeping your active window as bright as you wish.

Dimmer Pro is a light and free (without limitations) utility that will protect your eyes and also help you to focus on your work, by reducing the brightness of your screen except for your currently active window. This can be even more useful when you watch a video or play a game in windowed mode, read an ebook, etc.

The program is based on Lionel Lemarié’s LeDimmer, a command line utility, upon which it builds a convenient user interface that lets you select easily levels of transparency, helping you to make your inactive windows darker instantly.

An optimal setting can be 120-180, but you can choose from 30 to 255. Choosing 30 the dim part of your screen is only slightly darker. In 255 inactive windows are fully dark. Choose “UnDim” to restore your screen to uniform brightness, i.e., to disable the dimmer. The default keyboard shortcut for using Dimmer Pro is Alt+Shift+G, but you can change it to whatever you find convenient.

Dimmer Pro is safe, fast and light, a program you will appreciate whenever you want to focus on some task or just need to protect your eyes.

To ensure a trouble-free installation, right-click the setup file and select the option “Run as administrator.” You need also to make sure after the installation is complete, that the program folder and files have write permissions. Finally, to avoid UAC prompts upon startup you can include the program in a whitelist of trusted applications.
