Rip DVDs to MKV or MP4, subtitled in any language, even with cropping and scaling, using HandBrake

What a joy and relief, after so many tests to find a program that really does the job! If you are in search of a free DVD ripper, of a program that will let you convert your DVD movies to mkv or mp4 video files (you can convert these to avi or wmv later if you wish, using numerous and reliable video converters), you don’t need to search anymore!

HandBrake was able to recognize my movie immediately (chapters, etc) directly from the DVD drive (no need to copy the DVD first to the hard disk, as avi.NET wanted, for instanse), then find the subtitles included in the DVD movie and let me choose which of them to include in the output video file; it recognised the default audio language and the size of the frames, and it let me preview 1 minute of the job as it would appear when finished. Non-latin characters are supported just fine by HandBrake in the subtitles.

Supported Sources: Any DVD or Bluray-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image, real DVD or bluray (unencrypted — removal of copy protection is not supported), and some .VOB, .TS and M2TS files. Outputs: MP4(M4V) and MKV —  Video: MPEG-4(ffmpeg), H.264(x264), or Theora(libtheora) *  Audio: AAC, CoreAudio AAC (OS X Only), MP3, or Vorbis. AC-3 pass-through, DTS pass-through (MKV only)

Features:  Chapter selection, Chapter Markers * Subtitles —  Vobsub and Closed Captions — SRT import and passthru — SSA passthru or burn-in (experimental) * Constant Quality or Average Bitrate Video Encoding * Support for VFR, CFR and VFR * Video: Deinterlacing, Decomb, Detelecine, Cropping and scaling * Live Video Preview

HandBrake will make use of all your cores, if you have a multi-core processor. In a Quad Core processor it needed about an hour to rip a 2 hours movie, without causing any problem at all to other running applications. HandBrake is pure joy to use, clearly a 5 stars program.
