Snarfer RSS Reader Abandoned
I haven’t used “all” RSS readers, but a lot of them, including RSS Bandit, FeedDemon, FeedReader, GreatNews, RSSOwl, which are good readers and I’ve chosen to present them at TheFreeWindows. Let’s say that I have used about 15 rss readers: Snarfer is indeed one of the best from some points of view.
This doesn’t mean that Snarfer is “perfect”; it starts in a “sponsor” page you can’t avoid, without even a shortcut key to jump to your feeds; even worse, opening posts in the external browser, always opens a new browser window, there is no option of opening subsequent posts in new tabs instead of new windows. Snarfer can also be disastrous: if you have selected a folder with feeds and accidentally press the delete button, you are given no warning and the folder is instantly deleted, without undo options. You need to have always a backup of your feeds in an opml file, otherwise you will lose them.
Snarfer is fast and convenient, able to change themes/skins, with keyboard shortcuts so simple, that I wonder why other readers don’t use them (just a spacebar press to change message, pageup/down to scroll the page – or arrowup/down), etc. Snarfer claims that it “provides a new approach to RSS feed aggregation focusing on speed, efficiency and ease of use.” It is simply true.
Snarfer RSS reader includes also a Search Wizard that enables users to construct complex searches for items or information contained on Google, eBay, or Craigslist. These searches are intelligent and tent automatically returning new results to Snarfer every time the feed is updated. Snarfer uses several search engines for that, and the results contain many duplicates. I think it should be able to discard the duplicates.
