If Winamp or other programs locked a file and you can not delete it

Sometimes you may try to delete, rename, move, etc., a file, only to discover that Winamp or some other program won’t let you. You can close Winamp, but this means that you stop and restart your music. Normally Winamp unlocks a file when it plays another one, but there are occasions when a file remains locked, even if Winamp plays something else or nothing at all.

You can use a freeware such as Unlocker or Unlock it to ‘liberate’ your file, but, if you prefer a program that doesn’t need installation (being ‘portable’), you can download Process Explorer, a free and small utility that will let you track system processes and ‘liberate’ files locked by a process.

Here is how to use Process Explorer in case you need to ‘liberate’ a file from Winamp (it works for other processes too).

1) Start Process Explorer and make sure you see its bottom pane by going to the “View” menu and marking the Show Lower Pane option. Then go to “Lower Pane View” (exactly below the previous command) and check the Handles option.

2) At the top pane locate Winamp and click on it. At the lower pane locate the file that is locked by Winamp and right click on it. Select the Close Handle command. — Enjoy!
